Rowan Tree Are Clare Bowling Champions for 2013

Cllr. Mary Howard presents the AIB Bank Perputual Cup to the winning Rowan Tree team

The Clare Bowling Team Championship was held on Thursday last at Clare Leisure World in Ennis when twenty seven teams, each consisting of 4 players per team, battled it out for the AIB Bank Perpetual Cup. In an action packed final the 2013 Championship was won by the Rowan Tree with a final score of 542 pins.

The highly entertaining and closely contested final saw the Rowan Tree hold off a very strong challenge from the 2012 champions, The 4 Amigos, to capture the AIB Bank Perpetual Cup for the first time.

The Rowan Tree team of Conor Naughton, Alan Naughton, Ronan Keane and Colin Dinan, who were runners up last year, proved too strong for the opposition on this occasion.  The 4 Amigos captained by Ross Darmody finished in second place having fought hard to retain their title.  However they were unable to match the more skilful Rowan Tree in the final.  The Amigos did have the satisfaction of recording the highest team score of the night when they returned a total score of 571 pins in their first round qualifier.

The Legal Eagles team of Paul Tuohy, Stephen Loftus, Joe Shannon and Gerry Walsh representing former winners, Michael Houlihan & Partners, finished in third place for the second year in a row with 439 pins, while Va Va Voom representing Ennis Electric held on to capture fourth spot with a score of 377 pins.

At the presentation of the trophy, Michael Sharkey, AIB Bank Ennis, congratulated the winning team and thanked all the teams who competed for the 2013 Championship.

Proceedings from the Clare Business Bowling Championship are used to part fund the very successful Ennis Youth Ambassador programme.  This programme offers an opportunity to second level students from Ennis to participate in an exchange with students from Phoenix each year as Youth Ambassadors.  While on the programme the students learn to appreciate and understand the culture of a new city through an abroad/home stay experience.  Their experience as a Youth Ambassador also helps to prepare them to confidently assume their place in a global community.

Three 4th year students from Colaiste Mhuire in Ennis, Aoife Sheehan, Darelle Colleran and Shauna Lyons have been selected as the 2013 Ennis Youth Ambassadors.  They will spend 3 weeks in Phoenix in July.  During their visit they will among other things, hike in the Grand Canyon, watch the Arizona Cardinals baseball team in action, visit Disney Land and experience life in the busy and fast growing City of Phoenix

The Ennis students will also meet up with Ambassadors from other Phoenix Sister Cities including Calgary,Canada; Catania,Italy; Chengdu,China; Grenoble,France; Hermosillo,Mexico; Himeji,Japan; Prague,Czech Republic; Ramat-Gan,Israel and Taipei,Taiwan, while in Phoenix.

Since the formation of the twinning relationship between Ennis and Phoenix in 1988, civic and community leaders from both sides of the Atlantic have visited each other and developed strong ties and personal friendships. Over the years political and business leaders, arts and cultural representatives, technical experts, teachers and students have participated in regular exchanges. The focus has been on commercial, cultural and civic activities. Opportunities for trade and education links have been promoted and developed and tourism and enterprise potential has been highlighted.
